The Four Seasons

Project URL:
http://ccsd.edu/bardonia/ESL/season/

How it works:
ESL students often come from parts of the world where the seasons are very different from those in New York. In this lesson, students learn to identify the four seasons of the year, describe the weather patterns and create a picture to represent each season, and identify at least one holiday that occurs in each season. The WebQuest format is used in this lesson, and students present their information in the form of a simple PowerPoint presentation.

Standards addressed:
Students access, generate, process, and transfer information using appropriate technologies; and listen, speak, read, and write for information, understanding, critical analysis, and evaluation.

Materials used:
In order to implement this lesson, students need access to a computer with  Internet capability and PowerPoint software as well as relevant books.

The students:
The Four Seasons is designed for intermediate- to advance-level ELL students who can use the Internet to access information. Prior to beginning, students will need to have knowledge of how to create a PowerPoint presentation.

Overall value:
This project identifies a unique need of ESL students, who often have difficulty understanding the seasons in New York State and have no cultural context to assimilate English terms relating to seasons.

Tips:
Further information is available on the Teacher Page of the above URL.
