Daily Classroom Special: Balloon Racers
About this Daily Classroom Special:
Science to Go
provides easy yet meaningful science activities for grades k-8. Science to Go was written by Barbara Smith, Magnet Coordinator at Harvard Elementary, Houston (TX) and former Teachers Network web mentor.

Balloon Racers

Objectives

Use and construction of models, aerodynamic principles, simple machines.

Activity

Give each student or group of students 40 square cm of cardboard (have the custodians save boxes for you!), two straws, tape or glue, two straight pins or toothpicks, and a balloon.

Have students design and construct a model car that runs on balloon power. (*Safety note: have a bicycle or balloon pump available to inflate the balloons, to avoid balloon inhalation risk.) Test cars for speed and distance traveled. Graph results.

Materials

Cardboard, straws, tape or glue, straight pins or toothpicks, balloons, pump.
