Digital Storytelling by Carolyn Hornik

Included in the New York City Chancellor’s Performance Standards, are technology and writing objectives. Students are expected to use standard setting to produce a report of information, a response to literature, a narrative account, a narrative procedure, and prepare and deliver an individual presentation. In addition, applied learning standards, including using information technology to assist in gathering, organizing, and presenting information, must be met.

An exciting medium for attaining these standards and appealing to the diverse learning styles of students is digital storytelling. Digital storytelling is the process of integrating the art of storytelling with multimedia tools, bringing the processes into the 21st Century. Through the magic of digital storytelling students become motivated to write about their thoughts, feelings, opinions, personal experiences, knowledge and responses to literature. The process of digital storytelling brings the art of storytelling to life by making use of graphics, video, audio, animation, and web publishing, producing actively involved learners.

Steps In Creating A Digital Story:

  • Storyboarding – The text of the digital story can be planned using graphic  organizers such as: (http://www.eduplace.com/graphicorganizer/pdf/storymap1_eng.pdf   and     http://www.coe.uh.edu/digital-storytelling/PhotoStory3-Tutorials/Tutorial_Storyboard.pdf
A story board that includes organization of narration, sounds and music can be found at: http://www.digitales.us/resources/storyboard_template.php
  • Writing the story  - Topics for digital stories can be generated from literature, interviews, research, personal experiences, and personal thoughts.
  • Image search - A search can be done on www.kidsclick.org and www.google.com Images can be placed onto each slide.
  • Insert videos and audio – These can be found on the Internet or on the software tools listed below. Students can also record the narration of their story and insert that.
  • Inserting transitions and animation effects – Transitions are special effects between slides. Animations are moving images. These can be found on the software tools listed below.
  • Sharing the digital story with others – Presentations can be shared within a class, other classes, parents, and as an auditorium presentation. The pride resulting in the presenter and the enjoyment of those viewing the presentation is immeasurable.

Tools To Use In Creating A Digital Story:
