Designing a Travel Brochure

This project is a follow-up activity to the story "China's Little Ambassador," by Betty Bao Lord. While reading this story about a girl who moved from China to New York, the students became more interested in the home countries of their classmates. They chose a home country (other than their own) and navigated the Internet for source information on the country. Students were highly motivated to conduct web-based research. They practiced note-taking skills and integrated the facts they learned to design a travel brochure for the selected country.

This program is about houses and how people build them, and how they become homes. It explores different types of homes and how the environment effects what types of houses people construct. It uses visuals, repetitive verses, poems, songs, and hands-on projects to involve the students in building vocabulary and exploring the reasons why people in different environments have different needs.

How can students Think Globally, Act Locally? A team of ungraded high schoolers and bilingual ninth graders responded to this challenge by applying recycling guidelines to a venture capitalist model. Students visited a recycle center and a plastic s museum to assess how discarded material can evolve into useful and/or aesthetic objects. Identifying paper overuse as a major school problem, the young entrepreneurs hosted representatives from Earthworm, Inc. and learned how to recycle school paper.

This unit on the rainforest touches upon almost all standards for English Language Arts. Students will be able to read and comprehend informational material. In response to the reading, they will be able to write a persuasive business letter. As a group they will be able to formulate possible solutions to the rainforest problem. Their business letter will demonstrate an understanding of the rules of the English language in written and oral work. Before e-mailing their letters they will revise their work to improve its clarity and effectiveness.

This project helps students to design a book cover illustrating their hometown or native country. This lesson is part of the Project Arts program and involves team teaching with an art teacher. Because many ESL students dont have clear memories of their native lands, the Internet was used to find photos that provide a visual frame of reference for their original homes. The book is titled Travels with (students name) to (student's hometown or country.)

Stories of our heroes, past and present, can challenge youngsters to read about leaders in the news. They integrate Internet research and computer technology with their study of American history and literature. Then, students compare patriots from the past ~ George Washington, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Dr. Martin Luther Jr., etc. ~ with present day patriots ~ Secretary of State Colin Powell, Congresswoman Nydia Vasquez and Governor Gary Locke, etc. They identify values-related quotations and begin portfolios that eventually include persuasive essays, family interviews, letters to elected officials, poems and reflections.

Virtual Travel Through the USA

The students wrote about their experiences living in Ridgewood, New York City. They e-mailed their writing to a Miami, Florida school and received return e-mail about life there. The students in both states also surveyed their own schoolmates on various topics. They exchanged the data and graphed the comparisons. The students did a great deal of writing and learned to create bar graphs and pie charts using a computer spreadsheet.

Women Immigrants in the Promised Land

Students read The Promised Land that chronicles a young Russian girl's "coming to America." They learn about Saturday Evening Girls, an early twentieth century support club for young Italian and Jewish women in Boston's North End. Interviews with family members and leaders from their own communities help them understand how successful mentorship opens doors to educational and career opportunities.
