College Research and College Essay Writing

Purpose

The objectives of the project is to help students determine which college they should apply for based on their personal and academic background. The student will also learn how to write a college essay that can describe him/her.

  1. The student critiques funtional documents, i.e. various applications;
  2. The student produces functional document appropriate to audience and purpose.

Teacher:

  1. Do research in the Internet to find some college sites for students to visit.
  2. Demonstrate to the student how to use "infoseek" search engine to search for the college web site of their choice.
  3. Discuss the most efficient ways to navigate the sites
  4. Discuss the most important issues when writing a college essay.
Students:
  1. Navigate various college web sites to decide which is the college of your interest;
  2. Compare at least three college admission requirements and make a list of advantages and disadvantages of each college. Write a short report explaining why you have decided to choose this particular college to apply to;
  3. Read about how to write a successful collge essay, and make notes of the most important tips.
  4. Read some sample college essays and start composing your own essay;
  5. On your web site, list three best web sites for college research &application (with annotation), and your reflection on doing college research on-line. Share your college essay with your classmates by uploading the essay onto your web site.
