TeachnetUSA: Crimes on the Great Lakes

Drug Smugglers

Motivation
As a part of the USCG Drug Interdiction Team you have been informed of a shipment of drugs that is being transported across the Great Lakes.  The informant knew when it would be shipped but not on which boat.  If this shipment would ever reach the streets it would be worth one million dollars.  Your assignment is to determine where the ship has been and make a guess about where it is going so that the Coast Guard can stop them in the middle of the lake and have no opportunity to meet with their contact.  There are five ships that are being tracked.  Their call signs are:

Activity
Choose one of these five Ships.  To find out what each ship is like click on the ship name.

Ship Name
Americo Dean
John W. Brown
J.R. Rouble
Curly B
Seaway Queen

Locate a ship on the Marine Observations Web Site.  Call signs for ships may be choosen at random since the actual name of the ship is not known.
    On your Tracking Log:

  • List its longitude, latitude, date, and time on the data table.
  • List the positions over the last seven hours giving the longitude, latitude, date, and time.
  • Plot these 8 positions on a map of the Great Lakes.
  • Look at the map of the Great Lakes.  Based on your map make a guess where it is going.
Repeat this for the other four ships.

Ships were originally located by using the NOAA Interactive Marine Observations site.
