Alfie Kohn responds to the TNLI Fellows' discussion of “Unconditional Teaching"

Thanks so much for sending me this link. I read the messages with great interest -- and, not surprisingly, a range of reactions. I'm delighted that the article stirred up some real self-reflection, which of course takes a lot more gumption than finding a reason to dismiss a message that call one's own methods into question. For those who are interested, my book Beyond Discipline discusses in considerably more detail why behavior management techniques and teacher-based control inevitably turn out to be counterproductive, and what it means in a real classroom context to work *with* kids rather than doing things *to* them.

Again, I appreciate your giving me a peek at this discussion.
