The Five E's: A Lesson Plan Model

The Five E’s Lesson Plan can be used as a template to assist you in planning your inquiry-based lessons. It acts as a wonderful guide in outlining content along with process. You can focus on presenting and explaining ideas; constructing knowledge through active learning strategies; and developing the ability and disposition to investigate.
The Five E’s lesson plan allows you to really see how to integrate scientific inquiry into your lesson through a clear cut step-by-step plan. During the exploration stage, the students can delve into the investigation while you focus on recognizing their specific science process skills.
Each “E” represents part of the process of helping your children sequence their learning experiences to develop a connection between their prior knowledge and new concepts. The teacher serves as a facilitator as students construct new knowledge based on thoughtful inquiry and decision-making while clearing up any misconceptions.
