TNLI: Cases: In the Wake of “No Child Left Behind”
What’s the best way to evaluate the effectiveness of schools? This case explores how schools are affected by reports on Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) goals in the wake of the No Child Left Behind Act. How useful is it to measure a school’s effectiveness based on one standardized test? How can parents use these reports to make decisions about what school is best for their children? What other factors have an impact on how successful a school will be at effecting student achievement? Discussion Questions

  1. What are the good and bad points of making judgments about student progress and teacher effectiveness based on a standardized test score? Based on the growth model?
  2. How can we improve the NCLB assessment policy to ensure effective and useful assessment of all students, including ELL and special education students?
  3. What kind of information should parents rely on when determining what school to attend?
  4. What kinds of things can help the teachers at Bennett stay motivated to remain teaching there?
